Dear Deer Problems
July 21 to

After 5 years and little to no trouble with deer in the backyard the trouble started. The leaves on our new cherry tree were gone one morning this week, and the next morning there were more leaves from the apple trees gone, along with the cherry tomatoes pictured on July 16th.

So now there are gates at both ends of the greenhouse, hinged from the frame with special 3/4 inch pipe hinge fittings (from Lee Valley). All of the fitting are 'special' made to come apart easily, but hold tight without glue.

These are the same fittings that make up the green house, and we had them because at one point there was going to be a raisable roof that never was needed on the second raised bed.

The screen is bird netting that moved from Kelowna with us. We use it over the stand up strawberry bed when it comes ripe in June. We have it on good authority that the deer don't like the netting and leave stuff alone when they come across it.

Oh and we sprayed a deer repellant on the trees, and put spray on rags on the top of the access gates at the top of the yard. And we tuned up the fencing on the west side of the yard.

Hinge up gates on the other side, too keep them out of the tomatoes.

Each of the two gates hinge at the top and swing up out of the way opening half of the green house at once.

The detail of the hinge point between the two gates.

This is not looking like a good idea. Poor support for the gate when it is swung up, and twists at the pressure fitting as if you don't pick it up at the center.

So a few days later, it was rebuilt into side hinged doors. I think we will need some cross bracing in the gates if they are to last a long time.

This is the center open point, and they latch by slipping past the roof support post.

While we were at it the south side roof was raised to let more sun and rain on the plants (and opportunity for wind to raise it even more.

Gates rebuilt so they swing instead of lift, and cross bracing added so they stay straight. Remember that there is NO glue in this structure. And it has been in place for the last four years.
