The plan is that the two rubber mats, some of the grass and the edge of the flower bed will be replaced by three 24x24 cement blocks.

The planter shown here will move out a foot to put it out where it gets more sunshine and to make more room inside for the bird bath and summer house plants.

The cement blocks have been purchased so we are committed!

The bamboo poles hold netting for things like cucumbers to climb. This year it has a couple of tomato plants too. The pot of fuchsias will move to the end of the planter.

This gives a better view of how shaded things are.

The planter won't be moved until later in the fall when the cucumber and tomatoes in it are "done." There will be more room for sitting when the things inside the planter are moved back too.

Step one: Excavate for the 24x24 blocks to extend the walkway part. A 24x72 hole at least 3 inches deep.
(15:08:2019)
|
Getting a level line to make sure we dig the 3 inches needed. The level is the line, not the string that marks the extent of the excavation.

Done! Scraped level! Even moved the lawn edging to get the 72 inch width.
(14:08:2019)
|
Two bags of levelling sand, extra thick to allow for the extra rain coming off the deck above.
(16:08:2019)
|
|
|
First tile down and spaced off the existing patio.
(16:08:2019)
|
Two rows of the staggered pattern down and levelled.

|
|
|
That's it! All three rows down.

Like all good projects, you have to do something else first. In this case the project is to move the Mac apple tree over to the other side of the walkway. This tree is some thing like 20 years old, dwarfed by grafting a water sprout upside down on a dwarf root.
The other thing to do is to make a handle so one can get a grip on the planter.

Put down some wood to slide the planter on and tie a rope to harness up the plow horse. I'm betting this things weight at 200 lbs.
(17:08:2019)
|
Plow horse at work! Get a load of the horse shoes! Note the fuchsia has been moved from in front of the planter to the corner of the new tile.

Slid in place and jacked up on several concrete bricks. Irrigation hook up next step, and this half of the project should be done till after the tomatoes and cucumbers in the planter are done for the year.
(17:08:2019)
|
The apple tree now has two handles, irrigation is done. and it is moved over a bit, with the potted baby Ancient Redwood cuddled in behind it. (Anybody want a redwood tree for their yard?)

"Before." The string marks where the planter will be moved to when the tomatoes are finished for the year.

Digging out the space for the planter has begun.

This is the tomato plant we're waiting for. At the minute it has six small green tomatoes, but it is reaching for the sun!
