A worker has just pushed a large log from one side of the log sort to the other using this tug. Behind the logs, two WWII ships form a breakwater.

A the left side of the log sort two more WWII ships make up more breakwater. All four ships were commissioned in 1944, served briefly, then were decommissioned and sold to the village of Sayward for this breakwater in 1948.

Moving on northwest for an hour and a half - the highway winds far inland from the coast of the Vancouver Island - we arrived in Telegraph Cove.

It was the site of the first telegraph to the north island in 1912. It has also had a fish "saltery" and a saw mill. There is now a Whale Interpretive Centre which has skeletons of several kinds of whales and other sea animals. There is a large marina for use by boaters and kayakers and you can go on whale and grizzly watching tours and fishing charters.

This looks toward the modern hotel. There are also restored village houses and other buildings that look like they did when built in the 1930's and 40's that are used as accommodations but the outside is labeled with the story of the building.
