We were going to go on the 12th, to celebrate our anniversary, but the weather looked iffy. Although it was a cloudy morning the forecast was for afternoon sun. So here we are heading south along Hwy 19A towards the Buckley Baby ferry.

(17:09:2018)

Loading onto the 10 Am ferry from Buckley Bay to Denman Island. This is the "new" cable ferry put in about two years ago. We hadn't been on it before. It was smooth and quiet.

(17:09:2018)
Baynes sound from the ferry. The ferry ride to Denman Island takes about ten minutes.

(17:09:2018)

Zipping across Denman to catch the ferry to Hornby.

(17:09:2018)
Waiting to get on the 10:40 ferry to Hornby Island.

(17:09:2018)

That one is a regular ship, not a cable ferry, but also takes only about ten minutes. I think it goes faster.

(17:09:2018)
We arrived on Hornby with no maps except our phones, so we just followed what looked like the main road. It took us to Tribune Bay at Big Tribune Beach, which has lots of driftwood.

(17:09:2018)

It also has amazing rocks.

(17:09:2018)
Up close to the one with all those holes.

(17:09:2018)

This one has frozen and split at some time in the past. That's more rock that Sheila is standing on, not sand.

(17:09:2018)
Looking out toward the left side of the bay.

(17:09:2018)

Spray Point, which divides Tribune Bay in two.

(17:09:2018)
Moving on, we found another beach access to Whaling Station Bay near the south east end of Hornby Island.

(17:09:2018)

That beach had sand and tons of seaweed and shells at the tide line.

(17:09:2018)

A panorama wrapping the sides of the bay together!

(17:09:2018)
Skip ahead about two hours! In between we had lunch at the Forge, an amazing little eatery near the Co-op store and a couple of gift stores. Then we found our way to the Hornby Island Estate Winery, where we tasted and purchased some fruit wines and a blackberry port. The nice lady there even gave us a real paper map so we knew where to find things!

Here we've found the Sandpiper Beach Community Park near a group of what looked like 60's summer homes.

(17:09:2018)

The beach was a long way below us, and the path down looked precipitous, so we just looked from above.

(17:09:2018)
The view to the left towards St. John Point and Flora Island at the south east tip of Hornby Is.

(17:09:2018)

To the right is Downes Point.

(17:09:2018)
The blackberries were starting to get ripe.

(17:09:2018)

Down the road to the southwest corner of Hornby is the public dock at Ford Cove.

(17:09:2018)
Boaters are encouraged to be sure that their kids have life jackets,

(17:09:2018)

Another time jump. You can't circle Hornby Island by road, so we went back the way we came, stopping along the way at Isla de Lerena Vineyard & Winery, where we purchased a couple of kinds of their wines.

Then we continued back to the ferry to Denman Island in time for the 4 PM ferry. This dock is adjacent to the ferry.

(17:09:2018)
The break water beside the ferry dock..

(17:09:2018)

A closer look at that arbutus growing on the breakwater. There were several other healthy looking arbutus trees nearby,

(17:09:2018)
Back on Denman, we didn't rush across, but stopped at the East Cider Orchard where we came away with enough Gravenstein apples to make a pie and a bottle of fresh apple juice.

Then we found our way to another beach. This is right beside the Fillongley Provincial Park.

(17:09:2018)

This totem is at the entrance to the park campground. Then we took an unpaved back road that looped across the centre of the island and back to where we started.

We ended our day by catching the 5:40 ferry back to Buckley Bay and then having supper at the Roy's Towne Pub in Royston on the way home. (The cat's supper was late.)
