This is what the fence looked like in 2015 after some minor repair.
(16:09:2015)
And this is the our side after the repair. This picture was cropped so you could sort of see the hedge that has been removed. We forgot to take a picture before the chain saw came out and this was the only one found so far.

This is the 'not our side' after the hedge was removed and a lot of the English ivy was pulled off. See the humps and hollows in the top rail? These are suppose to not be there in the new fence.

This is our side! Part of the problem with the uneven top is that the post at the "high point" sets directly on the main root of the pine tree beside it. The root grew bigger around and pushed the post up.

We've decided, along with our next door neighbours, that it's time to replace the 30 year old fence between us.
We forgot a before picture - this is the fence after the removal of a straggly cedar hedge on our side.
(04:08:2020)
There is nothing even about this fence, and the boards are rotting and stained.
(04:08:2020)
The former hedge loaded up ready to go to the landfill for chipping.
(04:08:2020)
First we do a little placer mining, with the power washer to access the stump below ground level.
(06:08:2020)
Can't wash it out very deep, but it is way easer than trying to remove it with a shovel. This is what you get after a wash out!
(06:08:2020)
Next is the dull the chain saw exercise! Remember this is green wood and likely any other saw would have taken me days to cut them off. I did stop and re sharpen the chain twice on the process.
(06:08:2020)
Almost all done. Ground is levelled back and looking good. What you can't see is the biggest stump, just to the right of this picture, but it's lunch time, time to let the hole dry some and re sharpen the chain again. Am I happy I have a small power device to sharpen the chain.

This is the other side of the yard, with Sheila weeding. The guys that are doing our fence, happen to be the same ones that the people on the other side hired to build their pool fence. I promised to clean up the crap fencing that has been there since we moved in. That took a couple of hours in the mid day sun yesterday and an other trip to the dump.

While we were working on the other side of the yard, a start was made on removing the old fence
(10:08:2020)
All but three posts pulled and stacked for removal.
(10:08:2020)
The view from "the other side" of the fence. It sure looks nice with the fence gone, but fences and good neighbours and all that stuff.
(10:08:2020)
Fence is all out! Sure glad we don't have to remove it!
(10:08:2020)
Believe it or not, this is the hard part of our job. This hole is 22 inches deep, and dug with a 10lb wrecking bar and a post hole scoop. It took about 20 minutes to dig this one. Mind you the holes, all but one, on the other side of the yard were all in field rock.
(10:08:2020)
Damage to the irrigation system and storm drains next door.
(11:08:2020)
Line of posts.
(11:08:2020)
Mean while on the other side of the yard, holes are dug ready for work. Note that the new gate fence on that side is being moved ahead the width of the post so that the fence guys' work is unique and they can warranty it. They will not attach to our fence because of the warranty..
(11:08:2020)
Posts in place, and braced ready for concrete.
(11:08:2020)
Concrete poured and being smoothed out.
(11:08:2020)
Back to the other side of the yard, where the lead installer is forming up the posts over there.
(11:08:2020)
This is the top side. You can see where the "warranty off set" is going to be.
(11:08:2020)
Next door neighbour Paula learning the in's and outs of a impact driver removing the bracing so it can be painted.
This was an introductory class on "out's" Paula will have to apply for admittance to the graduate level "in's" class next semester after demonstrating proficiency on "out's".
(12:08:2020)
Allan painting the fence post.
(12:08:2020)
Again Paula with the wire brush rubbing of excess concrete before the painter arrives.
(12:08:2020)
Rails going up on the other side of the yard. This is going to be a high fence!
(12:08:2020)
Minor little problem at the back fence. Rodman side is 2 feet higher that the Carey side and there was no provision in the quote to remediate it.
(13:08:2020)
The all most finished wall on the west side of the yard. Not sure how this is going to effect our asparagus/garlic beds. It will sure cut down the late afternoon light.
(14:08:2020)
This is what happened at the very top end. Because the builder warranties the new fence for 5 years it had to not attach to our existing post.
(14:08:2020)
Paula and Allan putting stain on the treated 2x4's that will make up the fence rails.
(14:08:2020)
The stack of stained rails drying in the sun.. Took about 2 hours to get the job done.
(14:08:2020)
This is the stack of cedar boards that will make up the panels in the fence.
(14:08:2020)
The first of the boards installed. This was a teaching moment for the "helpers" who had never installed a "good neighbour" fence before.
(14:08:2020)
It is Sunday afternoon and 27C in the shade out there, and the fence guy came in and got a big start on the retaining wall. It took about an hour and a half and it's not finished, but they now have a good jump of finishing the whole job on Monday.
(16:08:2020)
Rails are all in, boards next.
(17:08:2020)
Finished!
Gates and post caps done! Building materials cleaned up!
Now we have some dirt to move and grass too plant!
(18:08:2020)
A little hard to see, but first night we had deer come through this opening. Just happened Allan was up and saw the automatic light in the back yard come on. When he checked to see what was up the doe headed out of the yard WITHOUT doing any damage to apples or tomatoes.
(DD:MM:2020)
This is a "Rube Goldberg" fix, but it should plug up the hole until we can come up with permanent fix.
(DD:MM:2020)
A permanent fix for the deer passage way.
(25:08:2020)
So here we are a week later than the last picture and a new development on the west side fence. They seem to think that pouring concrete in our yard is an acceptable cure for a erosion problem on their side.
(05:09:2020)
The landscape contractor sent his guys back to fix the problem. I'm sure they liked crawling in under the trees to take out the concrete.
(09:09:2020)
And when they were done this is what we have now! Nice clean edge, not concrete and some extra GOOD dirt.
(09:09:2020)
So here we are a month (almost) later and we have a start on a grass cover.
(22:09:2020)
Fence guy was by looking at a problem with a board that is drying out and splitting. He suggested that these post caps should be painted because they show a lot of end grain and likely to crack if not done.
