West Side Yard Rebuild
September 1st to 13th

This is what the hill on the west side of the yard looks like on September 1st. from the bottom.

The project is to rework it so that there is no side hill weeding required.

This has been a sorry sight since we moved in, but clean up never made it to the top of the to-do list. We have put in the steps and planted a few excess plants as ground cover.

The idea is to reduce the overall slope by raising the bottom edge with a block wall, and extending the level ground at the top. Then giving it a ground cloth/mulch cover to hold down the weeds.

And from the top.

Starting September 13ththis will be done by a crew from Paradise Plants in Courtney. They have done other yard work for us before. (Irrigation excavation in the back yard a couple of years ago, and remove Bamboo from the front yard this spring)

The level ground will be extended from the heat pump about 3 feet (to about where the first plant is visible) as a planting bed supported by another block wall about three feet high.

The job starts up!
Excavate out the steep part of the hill so the block wall can go in.

(13:09:2021)
The rock fill is where the bottom of the wall will be.

(13:09:2021)

Excavate for the sidewalk extension. The water in the path was caused by the raised bed being watered this morning.

(13:09:2021)
The start of the retaining wall at the bottom of the hill!
This is there to raise the bottom level up some and reduce the slope of the hill.

(13:09:2021)

Bedding sand in the walkway.

(13:09:2021)
Ready to start putting in the blocks.

(13:09:2021)

First block is down.

(13:09:2021)
This is the slow part. Absolutely level in both directions over the entire length of the first course.

(13:09:2021)

Start of the run-back along the sidewalk, so the fill can be higher than the steps.

(13:09:2021)
Measure once rule! The trick is getting the new stuff to line up with the 6 year old steps.

(13:09:2021)

The supply yard! All for our little project.

(13:09:2021)
Sidewalk is almost done!

(13:09:2021)

Sidewalk is done and edging added to hold the mulch back!

(13:09:2021)
The trick here is to get the new wall to line up with the edge of the 6 year old steps.

(13:09:2021)

Only the last of the cap blocks to install on the upper wall. Then it is ready for planting soil!

(13:09:2021)
All of the corner cap blocks have to be cut so they interlock with the wall below.

(13:09:2021)
Upper bed, for garden planting.

(13:09:2021)
The whole reno. Lower half, with mulch fill.

(13:09:2021)
The upper wall, with its side walk so Allan can walk across to weed/plant/etc.
