Last fall we moved the "red hot pokers" to a spot with too much shade, so the stems aren't strong enough to hold up the heads. This yellow one is trying to reach the light.

The hot weather has bolted our lettuce this week, and Quality Foods had 6 packs of assorted lettuce for sale. We'll give this a try! The burlap is to keep the sun off and maybe a little cooler. The shade was put up after a couple of hours of working in the sun, and will be revisited today to make it a little more stable.

Thanks to our "friendly racoon", this experimental mount had to be added to the bird bath used by the big birds (mainly Robins, but the occasional Owl etc.). The bird bath has had a dripper from the irrigation system to keep it full (something that had not been reliably done it the past)

This is the other bird bath/fountain that is located under our back deck. Used by the local wrens, chickadee's etc. and kept full by a dripper from the herb bed behind it. The racoons caused a clean-up of it yesterday. It has been on a timer (7:00am to 7:00pm) for years, but like all good timers it died. So the fountain was plugged in directly and ran 24/7. The fact this picture was taken this morning without having to rebuild means the rebuilt timer must have worked last night.
